There’s a reason why Mykonos is arguably the best known island in Greece, with only Santorini coming close in terms of fame. Mykonos however wins over its Cycladic sister in terms of beaches and partying, becoming a world-famous destination for nightlife, clubbing, and lazing by the bluest parts of the Mediterranean.

Traditional white Cycladic architecture, iconic windmills, intriguing alleyways that were designed hundreds of years ago to confuse pirates, and mild breezy weather throughout much of the year set the stage for a fabulous visit.

Busy party beaches (e.g. Paradise Beach and Super Paradise), as well as the cosmopolitan and chic beach of Psarou or the popular gay-friendly beach of Elia are just some of the beaches that will impress. There are however quieter beach corners all around the island too, which can be reached by kayaking, sailing or hiking. From Australian party-goers to young Saudi royals, Mykonos has earned its name as a happening destination across the world, complete with a very diverse and eclectic mix of bars and pubs.

Yet there is also an important cultural side to the island that shouldn’t be overlooked. This includes fine art boutiques hidden in the alleyways, chic Mediterranean restaurants, a handful of museums (archeological, nautical, agriculture and folklore museums to name some) and historical churches that will delight the eyes. It is said there are as much as 300 churches on the island, which partake in its glorious Easter tradition every year.

On a similar note, the nearby island of Delos is an archeological treasure that shouldn’t be missed. The uninhabited island does have an archeological museum worth visiting and is home to one of Greece’s greatest ancient sites.

As far as accommodation is concerned, Mykonos is home to some of the most fabulous luxury boutique hotels and five-star properties, in addition to well-designed furnished apartments and cozy mid-range hotels. Water sports such as diving and snorkeling also appeal to the more active types, while the few good spa hotels on the island are coveted by more leisurely types. There’s a good shopping scene on the island too, with high-end boutiques that carry designer labels and quality clothing items.

During July and August expect lots of people and a very busy island which is great if you like an all-night party atmosphere. For a calmer time head to the island during May, June, September and October. That said, any time you go you’ll find that this place is indeed, as the call it, the Jewel of the Aegean.
